Taking a Stab at “Scream VI”

By: Esmeralda Gonzalez

With an already established fanbase and a variety of reviews for the first installment of the requel, Scream VI killed at the box office!

Paramount Pictures

Earning $44.5 million dollars nationwide on its opening weekend, this puts Scream VI as the highest earning film of the franchise. What makes it so special?

Following Scream (2022) and its surviving characters, Scream VI takes us out of Woodsboro for a change. Similar to Scream 2 (1997), our main characters are thrusted into a new collegiate environment, which leaves the audience unsure of what to expect– especially in a setting as big as New York City.

Set about a year after the events of Scream (2022), Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Chad (Mason Gooding) are all trying to move on from the thrilling events that occurred to them the prior year. Unfortunately for them, Ghostface has other plans in motion.

Paramount Pictures

Following in the footsteps of the late Wes Craven could be a worrisome thing for anyone to do, but the movie was executed to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s best abilities. With the return of legacy characters, it can be hard to showcase them for the audience that has been there for some time without overpowering the new cast members. We got to see Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) and Gale (Courtney Cox) back on the big screen without taking away attention from our new core characters.

Although it did feel wrong watching a Scream movie without everyone’s favorite main heroine, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Sam is a thrilling aberration in comparison to her. The struggle that Sam has within herself of relishing in the possible pain she can cause others through actions similar to her father’s is certainly an unexpected, but welcomed, contrast from a typical heroine.

You can expect a plethora of twists and turns that’ll leave you aghast with this film. From the unveiling to the gory kills, Scream VI managed to leave everyone at the theater gasping and anxiously clutching their buttery popcorn. Overall, the film itself was a fun addition to a great franchise and I cannot wait to see what they do next.
