almost monday talks latest single, “only wanna dance”
By: Grace Srinivasan
777 Collective recently got the chance to chat with alternative-pop rock band almost monday about their new single, “only wanna dance.” Read more to find out what inspired this latest release, how they dived into the creative process as a group, and what their biggest inspiration was behind the song.
777 Collective: How did you come up with the name almost monday? Is there a significant meaning behind it?
Luke Fabry: There isn’t really any deep or meaningful reason behind the band name. When we first started playing together we needed a name so we asked our friend Jonah what we should be called and he suggested being called “the mondays.” We thought it was cool but like many names out there, it was taken. If we couldn’t be “the mondays,” we settled on the name “almost monday,” and it kinda just stuck.
If you could look back on your younger selves, could you have predicted that you would be in a band today? If so, is there any advice you would give to your younger selves to succeed in the industry?
Cole Clisby: Yeah, I’ve been playing in bands since I was nine years old - I’ve always wanted to keep doing it and tour the world playing music. If there was any advice I could give, it would be to always be focused on making the best songs. Write lots of songs with your bandmates and collaborators because eventually you’ll write something that you’re very proud of.
If you weren’t in a band, what career path could you see yourself in today?
LF: I was studying business in college so probably something in that direction
You make alternative indie music, do you see your musical style changing in the future? Would you want to experiment with other genres?
CC: I think we’re never trying to stay within one genre. When we write music it’s always based on what we’re inspired by and we don’t put any barriers or rules to what we can create.
What was the main inspiration behind “only wanna dance”?
Dawson Daugherty: I think when we got in the studio we really wanted to write songs that had good energy live. The main inspiration was wanting to have sick one that would make people wanna mosh a bit.
What do you want your fans to take away from “only wanna dance”?
LF: To dance.
What was your favorite moment when creating the single, is there any moment with the band in particular that stuck out?
DD: My favorite moment of this song was recording the guitars—we really went deep trying to get the right tones on the right guitar and that’s always a fun process.
What was the writing and recording process of “only wanna dance”?
DD: Very similar to every other process, to be honest. We worked on it with our producer Simon at his studio in Silverlake. All of us play a role in the writing process and we usually just hangout and get something out on the day.
How is “only wanna dance” different from your other singles? Is there anything you did differently during the creation process?
LF: “only wanna dance” is definitely one of our more up tempo tracks which comes off really well live. I don’t think we did anything different in the creation process which is a cool part of songwriting. You can do similar things in your creation process but still get different results just because that’s how the day goes. No rhyme or reason.
With social media constantly changing and adapting, have you done anything different to promote only wanna dance compared to your previous music? Have you found it more difficult to promote your music through up and coming social media apps like Tik Tok?
CC: TikTok feels like a good platform for music discovery. Social media can get really saturated with people promoting their music so we try to not overthink it too much when it comes to that stuff and just get our stuff out there.
