Beach House releases new EP ‘Become’

By: Maddie Turner

On April 28th, Beach House made a brilliant return to music (post the 2022 release of Once Twice Melody). The EP is titled Become and is a five song venture into the world of Beach House.

The record opens with the track “American Daughter”. “American Daughter” is almost 5 minutes long and the seemingly perfect opener. The beginning of the song fades in with signature Beach House style synth and you can instantly feel how awake and alive the EP is going to be. Following “American Daughter” is “Devils Pool”. This one specifically feels very reminiscent of 2015 album “Depression Cherry” and my personal favorite song on the entire project. This song touches on more of the heavier ideas and alludes to seeing someone struggling with substance abuse in lines like “you hide the hospital bills and at night I see pills, they go blue, white and red, they go straight to your head” and “you’re just somebody’s fool but I love you”. The third track on the EP is “Holiday House”. This one is incredibly ethereal, and stronger instrumentally than anything else on the record. On the fourth song, Beach House touches on fascination within a relationship, also heavily reminiscent of songs from older records like “Teen Dream” and “Depression Cherry”.

Closing the EP out with the title track, “Become” was perfect. The song has an immense build up throughout all of it and eventually breaks into an almost acoustic guitar part, all backed by beautiful sounds and vocals, also giving us lines like “Time goes by, don’t you cry”.

Beach House has always been incredible at experimenting with new sounds and writing styles but this EP just shows how they have perfectly balanced the experimental sounds while also still being rooted in older music. Become is a sneak peek of everything coming next with them, and it is definitely something to hear.
