Concert Review: almost monday takes on Phoenix

By: Lanie Kapsalis

Emerging from the vibrant indie pop scene of San Diego, almost monday consists of Dawson Daugherty (vocals), Cole Clisby (guitar), and Luke Fabry (bass). With over 400 million streams and an upbeat, addicting sound that radiates positive energy, almost monday continues to make waves in 2024 with new releases and a highly anticipated debut album on the horizon.

When I spoke with almost monday earlier during our interview, Dawson mentioned how overwhelming it can be to play in the massive arenas on their tour with AJR. Walking into the Footprint Center and standing on the floor for the first time, I immediately understood what he meant. The arena was enormous.

almost monday took the stage with an upbeat and energetic presence, ready to electrify the crowd. I admire openers who bring their authentic selves to the stage, delivering stellar performances as if it's their own sold-out show. The first few rows in the pit were jumping and singing along with the trio, who reciprocated the energy with enthusiasm.

One of the first songs I heard from almost monday was “only wanna dance,” popularized by its frequent appearances in Hulu commercials. I mentioned this to the band during our chat, and they chuckled, noting it's a common remark. Hearing it live was a personal highlight for me, as it brought back positive memories. Dawson, sporting a shirt with a tie, jet-black glasses, and his signature long curls, embodied the charisma of a '90s superstar. His vocals were spot-on, and the band's live performance resonated with the crowd, delivering great summer vibes.

almost monday is on a busy schedule with a summer arena tour alongside AJR and MXMTOON, dates in Mexico, a six-week European tour with The Driver Era, and a debut album set to release later this year.

Check out their latest track, “tidal wave,” and view tour dates HERE. Keep an eye out for their debut album later this year!
