Concert Review: Caamp Returns to Texas to Give Dallas an Unforgettable Night

By: Taarena Rathore

Fans of all ages walked into this venue, cowboy boots lining the floor. With other accessories, such as hats and bandanas, the night's folky vibes were unmatched. When it was finally time for the band to take the stage, cheers escaped the audience. However, they stayed calm as they waited in anticipation for the music to start. But as soon as lead singer, Taylor Meier, began playing, they could not hold it in. Fans were screaming, singing along, and some even yelling, “I love you.”

Besides Texas being the first few shows of the band’s tour, it also holds another special connection. Their album By and By, along with a few other songs, was recorded and produced in Fort Worth, a city near Dallas, and Meier was sure to remind the crowd about this. “This song was recorded just down the road in Fort Worth,” he said before getting into the song “No Sleep.”

During the time of this show, Caamp was awaiting the release of their 4th album, Copper Changes Color, which is now out. Their set design on tour alludes to this album through the warmer-toned lighting, featuring reds and oranges. A patterned red rug on the floor of the stage also added to the warm and cozy vibes of the night.

However, it was not just their set design that contributed to the calming atmosphere. The instrumentals echoed through the venue, especially with the deep ringing of the upright bass played by Matt Vinson. On top of that, every time the banjo was brought out, the crowd’s energy was uplifted. Towards the end of the show, Joseph Kavalec, who is typically on keys, played his trombone, and moments later, lead singer Meier took over the drums.

Overall, the band’s energy and presence simply make you feel at home. At one point in the set, they gathered on the steps of the stage, sitting together, to play their new song “Shade.” Shortly after, the energy reached another high through their cover of “Walking On A Dream” by Empire Of The Sun. The band somehow managed to take a song with an electronic, pop feel and transform it into a folk cover, while still maintaining a dance-like energy. Caamp’s music just makes you want to get up and move, and that is precisely what happened.

While it may have just been their third night on tour, Caamp gave fans exactly what they hoped for. The combination of their stage presence, powerful instrumentals, and intentional set design radiates a whimsical feel. Being in that venue and listening to this band evoked a sense of peace that cannot be described. It is safe to say that this tour is not one to be missed.
